Radio Type Approval
Bahrain

Radio type approval in Bahrain is a mandatory certification process regulated by the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) for all telecommunication and radio communication equipment intended to be marketed, sold, or used in Bahrain. This includes devices that use the radio spectrum or connect to public networks.

Key points about Bahrain’s radio type approval are:

  • Regulatory Authority: The TRA oversees the type approval process to ensure equipment complies with Bahrain’s technical standards and does not cause harmful interference to networks.
  • Scope: The approval covers a wide range of equipment such as mobile phones, wireless routers, satellite communication devices, Bluetooth devices, GPS receivers, antennas, transmitters, and short-range radio devices.
  • Technical Requirements: Compliance is based on technical specifications aligned with the EU Radio Equipment Directive (RED 2014/53/EU) test reports, including an EU-Type Examination Certificate as part of the submission. Equipment must meet radio frequency, safety, and network compatibility standards.
  • Application Process:
    • Applications must be submitted online by a local commercially registered company or a local agent representing a foreign manufacturer.
    • Required documents include an application form, valid declaration of conformity, technical datasheets, and type approval certificates from other GCC countries if available.
    • After technical review and conformity assessment, the TRA issues a Type Approval Certificate.
  • Certificate Validity: The TRA type approval certificate is valid for 3 years and can be renewed before expiry.
  • Customs Clearance: Importers must obtain a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the TRA, which confirms the equipment has type approval before customs clearance.
  • Exemptions: Equipment imported for personal use by individuals does not require type approval but must comply with Bahrain’s technical standards and cannot be sold or transferred locally.
  • Labeling: There are no specific product marking requirements mandated by the TRA for type-approved equipment.

In summary, any radio or telecommunications equipment intended for Bahrain’s market must undergo TRA type approval, which ensures compliance with national and international technical standards, protects network integrity, and facilitates market access with a 3-year certification validity. Local representation and proper documentation are essential for successful approval and customs clearance.
